Skyfire is now becoming the hotess mobile web browser for the smart phone. With the new leased update version of Skyfire 4.0, allowing users to utilize social networking apps with their floating “SkyBar” on the bottom, there’s no need to switch apps to Tweet or Like a page. RSS feeds, including Google Reader as well as Groupon and the ever so appreciative Flash Video for Apple users. These are just a few of the amazing options you have with the ‘worlds most social browser’.

As an Android user I prefer the all-in-one browser. Its user interface is nice and its easy to switch from Android view or desktop. For the iPhone/iPad user, the Flash Video makes it easy and fast to watch videos that are sometimes unavailable to users.

Free Fonts

Have you ever looked at a word and wondered…what da font is that called? Or as a designer was in need of a particular “look” to make that project POP.

Font - A set of type of one particular face and size of characters

And believe it or not, font is IMPORTANT to any project.

Now, there’s a pool of resources to fish from for ‘fonts’. Some you have to pay and others are free (yes, life is always better when its free). DaFont.com is not only an awesome water hole that most designers use from, but they’re FREE. They also allow you to see what your sample text will look like with the particular font you are considering. This is fabulous because it saves you time from downloading and installing something that you really don’t want or can use. And we all know…time is money. You can search by genre of font styles such as serif, sans-serif, foreign, script and also dingbats. I know, I know, why would you want to know about dingbats… but believe it or not, take one of those dingbats and make them into an outline and BAM you have yourself a graphic object. Even if your not a designer but maybe like the way a word was written or looking for a cool lettering style for a tattoo (although not all fonts are recommended) its a place to go and gander….kinda like ‘window shopping.

I’ve been using DaFont for the past 5 years now and like that they carry most of the popular fonts that clients like to see. The search is easy and helpful, also if they don’t have your font, they share with you other (of course sponsored) sites that do. You can also create an account and upload your own fonts you create.

I have to say, they have come to the rescue at times, like when I’ve received files and the font file was missing and the sender didn’t know what I was talking about….it was no worries. I just searched, downloaded and viola, borken links fixed…. timeline met

Lately I’ve been doing more web work than graphics. It’s a different pace and gives the other side of my brain a halftime break while I input the HTML. I’ve come across Wibiya.com which is a very resourceful FREE social media toolbar that will help increase your internet traffic to your blog or website.

Wibiya.com provides a nice resource of website applications that are easy and user friendly to add to your toolbar. Its allows the visitor to LIKE your site and automatically shares it in their newsfeed as well as subscribe via RSS or FOLLOW, just to name a few popular Social Networks.

Wibiya allows you to customize your toolbar in size, appearance and applications. The wizard is very easy and depending on how customized you want your toolbar, it could be done with a Source Code in less than 5 mins. Now, that’s fast!

Once you create your account, you can monitor your traffic from your dashboard with details of location, key searches and application hits.

I think the Wibiya Toolbar is an excellent tool for people who are looking for an easy but more intermediate way to control their web traffic.

Google Voice will have you GooGooGaGa

Google Voice

A friend of mine really had me thinking some time ago about Google Voice. I remember hearing the rumors and seeing the clips of Google Voice from my Gmail inbox, but didn’t really pay note to it since I was happy with my voicemail I already had. And then it happened. My content little answering application from the free Android apps decided to ‘charge’ a fee for the service. Ugh! Not only that, it started to have ‘glitches’ and like a friend who moved away, it began to forget about me. It started not to notify me of voicemails or cut off in the middle of the callers attempt to leave a message. I have to admit, I became disappointed in my little app I had grown so fond of.

During a visit to my friends house, the subject of ‘voicemail’ came up again. My friend’s sister needed a new number to avoid a somewhat obsessive/mental ex but 1) there’s a fee to pay for the phone number change 2) still needed the current number for expecting incoming calls. Solution, Google Voice. It was perfect and also my cue as well to chime in on the opportunity to also create my account.
It was easy. Not too complicated and easy to follow steps. One thing I love about Google – It’s simple and understandable
So whats the big deal?
1) Google Voice is a FREE voicemail client
2) It’ll text you as well as send an email of voicemail notification
3) You can create a number of your choice (if available) which is awesome for someone like me since I freelance
4) You can keep the lowest phone plan and utilize Google Voice to make your calls, which again….are FREE
and 5) You can personalize your voicemail(s) for certain calls.

I’ve been using Google Voice ever since. Not only have I been able to save on my minutes, have a professional number AND filter my phone calls, the best part is I don’t miss my voicemails anymore…now if I can just get a new phone, lol

My “Used/New” Ride – TREK 7300 Hybrid

Introducing ...."(haven't thought of a name yet)"

Today I’m introduced into the “bike community” Yaaay!

I’ve been on a hunt for a used bike, although I’d love a new one but with the budget I had to spend, it had to be used. I’ve never been much of a bicyclist other than a child and I have to say. This has been a very good learning experience. My purpose to initially decide to buy a bike was to save money. Times are hard, as for many, and a couple of hundred dollars is what I’ll be saving utilizing my bike instead of my car. Plus, its good for the environment.

I bought, let’s just call him “Trekki” for now, at a pawn shop. Value Pawn that’s located on Gandy Blvd in Tampa. It was surprisingly an excellent experience. I’ve never really gone to pawn shops other than when I was looking for an amp for my guitar and heard I could find them reasonable there, but after watching that PawnShop show on t.v., I was a little apprehensive. I was greeted immediately and saw the bikes available. This little bad girl was all by her lonesome (next to a Cannondale I’d LOVE to have). Robert, my sales guy who later to me know was the manager, approached me. He smiled brightly and had a nice tone (good salesman I say and why he’s MANAGER *wink*wink). I looked it over then explained I was shopping and was going to look over some other bikes, which I did and wasn’t as impressed as I was with this one.

I returned a couple hours later, ready to test drive “Trekki”. After giving my DL, I took him outside and pedaled around the parking lot. The positives; Gears shifted smoothly, although had some difficulty in some gears, but overall was nice. Brakes stopped on a dime, VERY nice. Tires (mismatched, rear is a replacement) are in decent condition and I seemed to sit comfortably on it feeling in control of the bike. Quick release wheels. No rust. SOLD. Now the negs; The SRAM gears need some tuning and grip replaced, handlebars need new grips, new crankshaft (although it rides good for now, just noticed some teeth bent which isn’t good for the chain), new cable, new chain, more comfortable seat and better pedals. It’s like a car needing its 100,000 mile tune-up. Some little extra perks it has which to me saves me money from having to buy; the rear rack, mini air pump, bottle holder (although standard on this model) and a mirror.

So how much did this badboy cost me – $80 buck-er-roos. It was marked 120 but like the outside side says..”Let’s make a deal” and Robert did after I showed him some of the work that this bike needed. I got the extended plan which if in 6 months I’m not happy I can take it back. Wow I thought. How awesomemer can it get.

So I take “Trekki” home and eagerly grab my lock chain I bought 2 months again for this moment, grabbed a bottle of water, my glasses, mouth piece (I like my teeth, lol) and bag. I was out like lighting. My first stop. The Westshore Mall 3 miles from my place.

There’s a couple of things I never really paid attention to as I will now….Bike Racks to park my bike! Where the heck are the bike racks I rode around to find. Finally I asked a little ol security guy and he escorted me to them. Nice fellow. Well after a stroll and some rest at the mall, not to mention to buy my HALO Reach.

After some nice chill time, I decided to head back. A couple of other things I am now aware of being of this new “community”.

People REALLY don’t pay attention to you nor realize the stop line is 20ft BACK
People like to yell out of their cars like crazies at you with mumble jumble that you REALLY can’t hear nor understand
Comfy seat is a MUST on a bike
Gloves are not a bad idea to prevent blisters and provide better grip
AND Definitely need handlebar adjusted to a comfortable position. I’m sure as I continue on this new voyage I’ll find other “new lessons”

I have to say. I LOVED to wind blowing in my hair. Being able to notice all the little things you can’t appreciate while being in a car, like the smile of flowers or sewage (blah), pretty houses and landscape, little squirrels and lizards on your path, the sun giving you some love, being healthy and not having to wait in traffic (only at redlights unless it’s safe to cross)

So I’ve been seeing Foursquare social icons on more and more websites. I recently updated my TweetDeck and finally decided to find out, what the heck “Foursquare” is. After some research, here’s the jest.

New York mobile startup Foursquare is one of the hottest Internet companies around.

But what is it? What’s it for? How can you get started?

Foursquare is primarily for letting your friends know where you are and figuring out where they are. Secondarily, it’s for collecting points, prize “badges,” and eventually, coupons, for going about your everyday business.

And it’s becoming popular. Foursquare now has almost 275,000 users in less than a year.

As a business, it hasn’t done much in the way of revenue-generation yet, but some strategies for doing so are coming in to focus. Promotional deals for frequent customers have already started popping up on the service. Co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley tells us that Foursquare will be experimenting with a wide-range of strategies over the coming months.

Jim, “My Computer Guy”

I have to say, to be in this business and not have your computer is like a construction worker with no tools, a truck driver without a truck, a football player without a footbal, it’s just plain sucks! So when my PC gets the hiccups or decides to crash, contact a virus from its permiscuity of surfing the net, its not a good day in the life of Desiree.

One day I was working on my computer vigiously and suddenly I saw the blue screen of death. My heart stopped, my eyes popped open and the clicking stopped. WTF? No not now! I’m so close to being done and I didnt, yeah, you may have guessed it….I didn’t SAVE yet! I’m sure for some you can sympathize where this is going. It was 4PM on a Saturday and the only place I could think of for computers was the worse place I could think of…BEST BUY! Not to say they can not fix or accomadate a problem, my issue is THEY are EXPENSIVE!

Where the heck was I going to find a computer repair at this hour during the weekend. I couldn’t wait till Monday, I had files ready for the printers, web updates and at that time I was going to school, and finals! Talk about stress. I didn’t have access to the internet without having to go to the local print shop and pay for internet time so I did what any other person would do… I GOOGLEd on my phone.

*Puff* Lists of computer repair, repair, computers, etc and etc. I began the list of calls. Closed, no answer, too expensive, not friendly, wrong store, no longer open and then on the second page second one down I found him. The one I now have on my speed dial, favorites and admirous adore.

Jim “The Computer Guy“. Now thats not really his business name, but that is what I have him under in my phone. His business name is A Plus Computer Services.

It was like “AHHhhh” the clouds opened and let the sun shine in. He answered the phone on the second ring – this was good. His voice was chiper and polite – 2 goods and he was willing to discuss my computers problem without even mentioning cost until after we finished our discussion – I’m in! I’m sure you could see the smile from here to Texas. Talk about a life saver. Not only could I drop my computer off at then, 8pm, his prices were very reasonable.

Jim fixed my computer and returned to me first thing the next day. It was amazing how fast the turnover was, not to mention he also gave me some helpful computer advice (free of charge).

I like Jim. I’ve moved to Tampa and still have made the trips back to Gainesville whenever I have any mishaps with my computer (yeah, he’s that good) as well as boast to all my peers how wonderful he is.

So a toast to you Jim Q. My Computer Guy. Much success to you and your business.

The sun shine brightly today and although I didn’t get much sleep, I felt extremely energetic. Actually it was energetic with a killer headache followed with nausea and dizziness, but nothing was going to make me frown. So, after I made my coffee and took care of some small details of personal chores I took a step outside and was amazed by the beauty of the world. The sky was a beautiful clear blue, skattered white clouds that painted the sky with imaginary friends and a cool breeze that made the palm trees sing. I took a deep breathe in and then out and said to myself, “Thank you God”. It felt good to be alive. To watch the planes in the sky, daydream on the ripples in the water and feel the sand in my hands. Although since my accident, I’m still not 100% me, I’m able to appreciate the blessings of being Alive and God’s Creations. That’s more that what others can do in the world. Breathe in and Breathe out… Life is Good.

My trip to Buffalo, NY was an adventure to remember! Me conquering the small but treacherous hill of snow on a sled from the Dollar Tree.

We made snowmen after and got some hot cocoa and sweet treats before we went to Niagara Falls for a late night tour where we threw our lucky pennies in the water in hopes of our wishes coming true.

The trip was short but memorable and I look forward to making it out there again and leaving my carbon footprints in other monumental places.

An excellent way to bring in the New Year.
